If you are in Galle, you can enjoying a slow walking around the old town. There is a small town with beautiful European-Asian mixed interior ambiance in the heart of Galle Old Fort area. You can enjoy the old town either by walking or cycling where you can rent from the nearby hostel/guesthouse. Only you need to prepare with the strong heat in Sri Lanka. Using a sun block is recommended for you who easy to get sun burn.
Me and Dinda started our day by eating our delicious lunch in a restaurant near the bus station. I ordered the South Ceylon Mutton Samba Rice and was so surprised with the portion! It can be for 2 or 3 person in my opinion! Later on, we walked to the Old Dutch White Lighthouse. During the walked, we were a bit surprised to see how beautiful the Old Fort area. It’s totally different with another area I have ever seen in Sri Lanka. This is like little Europe. Even it’s a bit touristic but for sure the area will be such an oasis for those who miss the atmosphere of old clean and vintage area which remind them to their home (or Europe). Anyway, we were so surprised and also happy to walk around the Fort.
Near to the route sign board, we saw a souvenir store, where later I bought a Srilankan puppet for a birthday present to my sister. It was funny to see some stuff are made by Nepali or Siamese. Since I am a budget traveler and avoid to use baggage. So I don’t buy anything for me, only tea. Also it’s a good idea when you travel, to go to supermarket and buy the souvenir from there. You can choose their famous food or beverages – for instance, I bought tea and some spices from Sri Lanka for home and my family. It is a pretty common habit in Indonesia – even a bit annoyed, when you go far away for vacation, you should bring something for your family and friends. I avoid this habit as much as I can.
The bad thing about the Fort only one. Rubbish! In few area, so many rubbish everywhere. The only creature who love to see it only black crows. Lots of them flew everywhere and try to find something to eat from the rubbish. I wish human naturally more respect with nature and their own land. The habit of littering really destroying our soil and the beauty value of a place.
Finally we saw the White Lighthouse. Before that, there is a beautiful cliff where we can sit for a while and enjoying the view of the ocean. Just like another touristic place, a minute after you sit, some of seller of many things will approach you and try their luck to offer you their things. I accepted their trap, haha. No, it’s not that bad as it’s sound. I just bought so many colorful hand-made bracelet from them. These ones are tiny stuff and beautiful gift for friends at home, no need to add another baggage.
Finished walking around Galle Fort, we took a tuk-tuk to go to Unawatuna. We heard it’s a beautiful beach. You can reach Unawatuna by bus, but Mala, our guesthouse owner suggest us to take tuk-tuk, since we will need to walk a bit far again to the beach if we use bus. Yes, from the main road to the beach is quite far. Glad we took the tuk-tuk. After made an appointment with the driver to pick us up again around 6 pm, we directly go to the beach. Oh, I felt so glad that I finally can see the ocean again!
Unawatuna is a beautiful beach in my opinion. It’s a place where the people get used to see tourist with their bikini stuff. I saw lots of white women just go here and there or laid back to enjoy the sun wearing bikini. Some locals still use their normal clothes when swimming to the water. Some men played the football, while a family with their 2 kids try to play a badminton, dogs running everywhere try to find food from the tourist, really an active and crowded afternoon but fun to enjoy. I tried to swim, the water is soooo nice and fresh. But the current is so strong. Some area full with coral, so hurt to step. You need to be careful with the current.
When the sunset came, time to go back to our guesthouse. Just like the deal, our tuk-tuk driver came to pick us up. Simple but nice thing to realize in Galle, people there kind of familiar to tourist, so they don’t force you to buy or take their tuk-tuk. If you don’t want, they won’t begging or do something annoyed for you. Yes, I can say, Galle is one of the nicest town in Sri Lanka.
